Support for adapting to a new country

Starting over in a new country is brave — and it can also be quietly disorienting. The language, the weather, the unwritten rules, even the humour is different. Many newcomers tell me they feel like a reduced version of themselves: capable at home, suddenly unsure here.

I work with immigrants in English and Portuguese, and I take the in-between place seriously — the grief for what was left behind, alongside the work of building a life here. Both deserve room.

What adaptation stress can look like

  • Saudade — a homesickness that has no exact English word
  • Feeling less capable, or less yourself, in a second language
  • Loneliness, even when surrounded by people
  • Stress about work, credentials, and starting over professionally
  • Tension between generations, as children adapt faster than parents
  • Guilt about family far away, especially in hard moments

Who this is for

This work is for newcomers and long-settled immigrants in Ontario — including Brazilians and other Portuguese speakers — who want support in their own language, or in a mix of both.

What sessions focus on

Sessions make room for both sides of the move. We might focus on:

  • Naming what was lost in the move — people, place, status, ease
  • Understanding culture shock and adaptation stress as normal, not weakness
  • Rebuilding identity and confidence in a new context
  • Family conversations across cultures and generations
  • Finding belonging without having to erase where you come from

My approach draws on evidence-based methods — including cognitive-behavioural, emotion-focused, and solution-focused therapy — always shaped around you: your story, your language, your pace.

Working together

Sessions are by secure video, anywhere in Ontario, in English or Portuguese. Everything starts with a brief initial conversation, so we can talk about what brings you here and see whether we are a good fit. See how it works for fees and what to expect.

You don't have to sort this out alone.

If something in you is asking for a space to talk, this is a good place to start.
